The Research Group in Molecular Microbial Ecology (gEMM) studies the ecology and physiology of aquatic system microorganisms, focusing on; the role of microorganisms in the biogeochemical cycles of the C, N and S and of organisms with potential for biotechnological applications; and on the characterisation of antibiotic resistant genes (bacterial resistome).

The Research Group on Ecology of Inland Waters (GRECO) is the group GRCT0017 of the University of Girona (UdG) and is composed by the faculty and staff from the Ecology unit (Department of Environmental Sciences) of the University of Girona, which is attached to the Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA, UdG). GRECO is a large and interdisciplinary group with extensive experience in numerous limnological research lines (particularly River ecology and ecotoxicology, Ecology and conservation of freshwater fish, and Limnology of Mediterranean lagoons and wetlands). The research group on Marine Ecosystems and Human Health (SeaHealth) of the Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA) – University of Girona (UdG) (Code GRCT0101), is the first group in Catalonia and Spain, and one of the few in Europe, which deals with the theme “Oceans and Human Health” in an interdisciplinary way, with the objective of studying the complex relationships that exist between the goods and services provided by marine ecosystems and human health and well-being.
